PoE1's 3.29.1 patch rewards players who stop treating every drop as an isolated upgrade. Charts, Voyages, Allflame crafting, socket colors, Mercenaries, and Abyss now overlap in ways that affect your build plan, your farming route, and even how you judge loot. Spending POE currency wisely starts with knowing which system is actually limiting your character.

Start With the Decision, Not the Wiki Page

A PoE1 wiki is most useful when you arrive with a specific question. "What is this item?" is fine, but "Can my character farm the source, and does this item fix my real weakness?" gets you somewhere. Check the patch history before trusting an old build guide, then separate the rule from the recommendation. A page can correctly describe an older socket system while still giving terrible advice for 3.29.1.

Check whether the mechanic changed in 3.29.0 or 3.29.1.
Confirm the item source before building around a rare upgrade.
Compare the resource cost against a temporary gear solution.
Test the plan in content your character can clear reliably.

Charts Are More Than Maps With Extra Loot

The Curse of the Allflame loop begins with Charts collected across Wraeclast, then expands through The Sovereign, Allflame Lanterns, and connected Voyages. A Chart's value depends on its own rewards, its border properties, its route position, and the character running it. A fast mapper may prefer a simple layout with strong reward density, while a boss-focused build may accept slower areas for better end encounters.

Before committing to a Voyage, inspect the whole chain instead of chasing the largest number on one Chart. Dead Man's Sulphur supports planning and border changes, while Ducats influence crafting decisions. Dredged currency can also be applied to Strongboxes and Essences, so spending every resource early may leave you unable to improve the most valuable encounter later. From what I've seen, a completed moderate Voyage usually beats an ambitious plan that strands you in content your defenses can't handle.

The Gear Rules Changed Under Your Feet

The socket rework is one of the biggest reasons older PoE1 guides need a second look. Gems can fit into any equipment socket, regardless of color, while matching colors grant quality to the corresponding gem. That turns colors from a hard access gate into a min-max layer. Put the required gems in first, confirm the item is worth keeping, and only then spend resources chasing a preferred color arrangement.

Old Question Better 3.29.1 Question
Can this gem fit? How much quality does a matching socket add?
Do I need exact colors? Is the quality gain worth the extra cost?
Is this craft exciting? Does the result solve a real gear problem?
Mercenaries Need a Loadout, Not Just a Damage Number

Mercenaries appear from Act 3, and the Scion's Luminary Ascendancy can permanently hire several, keep reserves, and bring one active ally into combat. Their value comes from uptime, positioning, supports, defensive reliability, and utility as much as raw DPS. A flashy attack that misses targets or leaves the ally exposed can underperform a quieter setup that keeps firing through an entire map.

Version 3.29.1 improves early performance, increases Infamous Mercenary appearances in maps, and gives map skills more support options. Permanent allies can also recover under the stated re-entry conditions, and Golden Lantern effects apply to them in Charts and Voyages. Build the ally around the content you actually run. A support-focused Mercenary may be the clutch choice for a fragile mapper, while a durable damage setup suits a character that already supplies strong defenses.

Abyss Rewards Are More Concentrated

In 3.29, Abyss pits and connecting paths are open from the start, so encounters no longer revolve around following a moving crack. Abyss is now the main source of Abyssal Jewels and Stygian Vises, with new pinnacle content, reward chests, and the Abyssal Bloodline class adding more reasons to invest. The 3.29.1 changes shorten Lich fights, add a crystal-beam arena feature, provide three chests after a Depths boss, and improve chest consistency for currency and Scarabs.

That structure favors players who value predictable encounter time over scattered map events. Track your clear speed, deaths, Atlas investment, and item demand before deciding the mechanic is profitable. Self-found players may care most about exclusive jewel and belt access; trade players may care more about desirable modifiers and pinnacle drops. If you're short on a specific upgrade, buying POE currency for sale can be faster than forcing a farm route that your current build clears poorly, but the better long-term answer is still a plan your character can sustain.
